Brodrick Road, SW17

A very long slim garden with low brick walling to the boundary.  The challenge here was to avoid closing-in the space creating a tunnel effect when addressing privacy issues as well as breaking up the length.

The Brief from the client was very clear: - a green, natural and ‘largely’ traditional garden/plentiful trees & foliage/cut flower borders/dining area to capture the evening sun/small water feature/ a longer - term plan to install a garden room in 4/5 years.

We approached this garden by dividing the space into 4 separate zones, each with natural 'walls' of Taxus hedging to link with the Taxus spheres in the borders.

A natural lawn with corten water trough and discreet copper outlet tap from within the hedging faces inwards towards the house, creating a gorgeous focal point.  Clay paver detailing, decorative gravel and Jura Grey Limestone for the terraces and stepping stones give a sense of unity throughout the scheme whilst each zone still evokes a different feel and mood.  A more rustic and staggered walkway of composite deck treads draws the eye across the diagonals meandering through the woodland before reaching a semi-disguised raised dining area for the evening sun with overhead wrought iron pergola to be covered in roses and jasmine.  The morning/day sun can be enjoyed from the terrace by the house, flanked with raised culinary herb beds.  A higher hedge to the rear with wrought iron reclaimed bench facing into the dining area masks the play space beyond, which in time will transform into the footprint for the garden room without any disruption to the new build.
